IIRC dead anvils are sought after by smiths who shape brass and aluminum. Some anvils have different characteristics.some rebound a hammer strike.some seem “dead” meaning the hammer rebounds very little. And I got a blacksmith hammer and every so often that anvil comes in pretty handy for whacking some obstinate steel. Now I'm no blacksmith, but I remember my dad having a forge and anvil.
